Japan Grants $ 40,000 to CPA to handle the preparedness for Tsunami in Timor – Leste

DILI, 23 march, 2023 (TATOLI)— The Government of Japan through The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Grants $40,000, to support the Civil Protection Authorities (CPA) to conduct the preparedness in facing the tsunami.

The Director of Climate Change and Environment, of UNDP, Domingos Lequisiga Maria, said that this grant will support CPA and will focus more on tsunami preparedness.

“UNDP will spend this grant to empower the training for teachers from schools and CPA’s commanders from municipalities to increase their knowledge about tsunamis and how to handle the tsunami,” the Director of Climate Change and Environment of the UNDP Domingos Lequisiga Maria, told reporters at City 8 Canossa Dili, on thursday.

He explained that so far UNDP has supported the State Secretary for Civil Protection (SSCP), through the CPA in the Department of Natural Disaster Prevention, by creating maps for the areas at risk of disasters that pose a threat to the country.

“The early prevention will help the Government, to prevent natural disasters, such as the impact of landslides, floods, and others,” he said.

The Director of Climate Change and Environment of UNDP, Domingos Maria explained that support for tsunami preparedness is not only for Timor – Leste but for 10 countries in the Asia Pacific region with a total budget of $ 1 million, while Timor – Leste receives over $ 40,000, in this year for the preparedness of preventing early tsunami in Timor – Leste.

At the same place National Commander of CPA, Assistant of Inspector of Police, Nuno Alves Gomes, said that this activity was to increase the knowledge of CPA members from the municipality, including teachers, about the action plan for the tsunami.

” From the knowledge that they achieve today, they will continue to give the training to the students and also manage all CPA structural in the municipality to carry out the preventive actions and mitigation actions on disasters risk especially with the tsunami disaster trick,” he concluded.
