DILI, 27 march 2023 (TATOLI – The National Election Commission (NEC), would organize a conference on april 12, involving all political parties to exchange ideas and thoughts on peace promotion ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections to be held on may 21, 2023.
“There will be a national conference organized by CNE to bring together all political parties, civil society, intellectuals, and relevant entities to share and exchange experiences and thoughts on how to ensure a peaceful and democratic election in the country,” CNE President José Belo told reporters after meeting the Head of State at the Presidential Palace, in Dili, today.
He said that peace and stability experts would be invited to share their ideas on ensuring democratic elections in the country: “The promotion of peace and stability is part of Timor-Leste’s commitment after the adoption of the Human Fraternity document.”
“At the conference, we will also discuss the types of political debate to be used for parliamentary debate in the upcoming elections,” he stressed.
Belo explained that a proper political debate would be adopted to spread the programs and visions of political parties to citizens.
Political debate gives voters access to information that can significantly improve voter knowledge and increase democratic participation.
“It is necessary to inform citizens about the election process to ensure that all citizens vote with their conscience and rationality,” Belo added.
However, a lack of information about elections in younger democracies like Timor-Leste can weaken the accountability of elected politicians.
