TL congratulates Cuba on its peaceful parliamentary elections

DILI, 04 April 2023 (TATOLI)- The National Parliament, today, congratulated Cuba for its peaceful parliamentary elections held on 26 march, 2023.

The relationship between Timor-Leste and Cuba has remained close as it grows from strength to strength since 2002.

“The bilateral ties of the two countries have been ongoing for over two decades. We congratulate the Cuban Government and the people of Cuba for the peaceful parliamentary elections,” National Parliament Speaker, Aniceto Guterres made the comments in the House of Parliament.

The Chairman of the FETILIN bench at the National Parliament, David Dias “Mandati” said that the congratulatory message depicted the good signs of the strong and close bilateral ties between the two countries.

Both countries have been working closely in the health sectors, with almost 1,000 young Timorese completing their medical studies in Cuba.

In 2016, with the support of Cuba’s National Sports Institute, Timor-Leste established the Department of Physical Education at the National University of Timor-Lorosa’e (UNTL), intending to increase human resources in the field of physical education.

“The cooperation agreement also paves the way for Timorese athletes to participate in various exchange programs, both in Timor-Leste and Cuba,” he explained.

Timor-Leste and Cuba have also signed cooperation agreements on sports analysis, sports facilities, training of coaches, training for sports administration specialists, and eradication of doping.

Meanwhile, MP Antoninho Bianco from FRETILIN pointed out that one of the notable contributions of Timor-Leste-Cuba ties was the establishment of the faculty of medicine at UNTL: “This faculty has contributed significantly to the development of human resources in the health sectors.”

Since its establishment, the UNTL’s medical faculty has produced hundreds of doctors, midwives, and nurses, contributing to the improvement of health services in the country.

“Cuba has always been committed to contributing to the training and capacity building of Timorese doctors,” Bianco concluded.
