Three Local NGOs released data on the accessibility of the disabled in public facilities

Dili, 12 april 2023, (TATOLI)- Three of Timorese local NGOs composed of Many hands-on Nations (Mahon), Association of Disability of Timor-Leste (ADTL) Community Based Rehabilitation Network Timor-Leste (CBRNTL) released a report researches focused on the accessibility of people with disability for Education, Health and Youth Training for Employment.

The Research and Advocacy Coordinator in MAHON NGO, Crispin Gomes De Jesus said the three local NGOs have carried out secondary research on the people with disability who cannot access inclusive education, Health, and inclusive Professional training.

The main objective of the researcher is to help the government as decision-makers and it is also to engage with the government policy to prioritize some programs for people with disability.

“Each NGO has researched a different subject. We are carrying out research across Timor-Leste. We also provide data to help the government to use for policymakers to implement its essential inclusive program in Education, Health and Professional training for employment,’’ The Research and Advocacy Coordinator in MAHON NGO, Crispin Gomes De Jesus told journalist at Suai room, this Wednesday

He added that the government of Timor-Leste should focus on the youth’s access to professional and vocational training to link youth to the market demand.

“All youth training centers should provide inclusive training to respond to the labor market. The training program can contribute to reducing unemployment issue in Timor-Leste.’’ He explained

He added that the solution to those issues mentioned above for the government of Timor-Leste should provide adequate finances to support the implementation of inclusive programs.

“We are facing a big challenge on lack of financial allocation on the inclusive program. Thus, we lack human resources and also health and education facilities,’’ he said.

The director of ADTL, Cesário da Silva said over 50 or 60% of People with a disability still do not have access to inclusive education, and there is still a lack of inclusive school facilities to support the accessibility of people in the teaching and learning process.

In last 2015 census recalled over 38.118 0r 3.2% of people with disability from the total population of Timor-Leste.

The CBRNTL NGO Heath 70% of people with disability could not access health facilities and mostly decide to have medical treatment at home and take tablets and drugs without a recommendation from the doctors.

It means across the territory of Timor-Leste does not have an inclusive health facility. People with a disability could not have proper medical treatment and they decide to have treatment at home.

It is known that the resource was carried out in six months to one year in 12 municipalities including Oeccusse (RAEOA).

It is known that MAHON got financial support from United Nations for Development Agency (USAID) worth 50 thousand dollars. It is a different budget from the other NGOs.
