Marry Mackillop supports President’s initiatives to promote a reading culture for children

DILI, 13 april 2023 (TATOLI)—Marry Mackillop signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the President’s office to support initiatives to promote a reading culture for children.

Director of Marry Mackillop, Alipio Baltazar said the purpose of this agreement was to assist the President’s initiatives in the Education and Culture of Reading campaign.

“This activity is related to Marry Mackillop’s activities in the Education section which are more focused on Kindergarten and Elementary students, where we have been working with the Ministry of Education since 2009,” said Director of Marry Mackillop, Alipio Baltazar in his remarks at the signing of the MoU at the Presidential Palace in Dili, Thursday .

According to Baltazar, most children do not practice reading, and that is because they face many problems, such as few resources or books. Therefore With the signing of this MoU, two goals will be implemented practice reading and motivate writers to write books.

“So, we are very pleased that this collaboration can encourage literacy through a reading culture,” he said.

He said, since 2009, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, around 72 textbooks have been approved by the Ministry of Education for use in the teaching and learning process, and in 2020, four employees from Mary Mackillop have produced four books that have been published and used by primary schools and kindergartens in the national territory of Timor – Leste.

In the same place, the Presidential Cabinet, Bendito dos Freitas expressed his gratitude for this collaboration, saying that this program would help rural communities, especially children, to access reading and writing programs.

“Improving reading habits is everyone’s responsibility, therefore previously the presidency has collaborated with Care International in Lafaek magazine and also Plan International, so today is working with Mary Mackillop to help students develop their reading habits,”
