DILI 13 april 2023 (TATOLI) – Timor-Leste’s copyright law approved by the National Parliament last november will come into force, in june 2023.

The copyright law aims not only to protect the rights of the owner but also to manage other related rights.

A team led by the Director General of the Secretary of State for Arts and Culture, Manuel Smith is currently organizing socialization in the municipalities to raise awareness of the law. 

“Socialization on copyright law has already been completed in Bobonaro municipality. The same socialization program will be in Manufahi next week,” Smith told reporters in Dili.

The law will promote the development of culture, art, literature, and science in the country.

The Copyright Law consists of 224 articles, aiming to protect and guarantee the creation, production, and commercialization of literary, scientific, and artistic works, as well as protecting copyrights.

The Secretary of State for Art and Culture, Teófilo Caldas said: “A person who copies an original product of certified ownership or commits plagiarism, will be fined and subject to penalties in the form of imprisonment and payment of compensation.”
