DILI, 28 april 2023 (TATOLI) – The National University of East Timor (UNTL) and the University of Coimbra (UC) signed, on 26 April, in Portugal, a cooperation agreement for the implementation of a master’s degree in Law at UNTL, under scientific coordination -pedagogical Faculty of Law UC (FDUC).
According to UC publications, the signing of the agreement to organize the Master of Laws at UNTL marked the deepening of cooperation between the two institutions.
UC Deputy Chancellor for External Relations and Alumni, João Nuno Calvão da Silva, stated that the collaboration with UNTL “is another important initiative to strengthen UC’s position in Timor, following an act of training judges and senior public administration staff, funded by the European Union, at the Sino Academy. -Our Lusóphone, and a training course for parliamentarians, under protocol with the National Parliament, in Dili. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the independence of the young Maubere nation.”
During their stay in Portugal, the UNTL delegation also visited other faculties at the University of Coimbra to deepen existing projects and explore new opportunities for collaboration between the two higher education institutions.
The signing ceremony was attended by UC Deputy Chancellor for External and Alumni Relations, João Nuno Calvão da Silva, Director of FDUC, Jónatas Machado, Chancellor of the National University of Timor Lorosa’e, João Soares Martins, and by the Ambassador of Timor-Leste in Portugal, Isabel Amaral Guterres.
It should be noted that UNTL established the Faculty of Law in 2005 in collaboration with the Portuguese University Foundation.
The Faculty maintains links with partner universities in Portugal, notably the universities of Coimbra, Évora, Porto, Lisbon, and Minho.
It should be noted that UNTL is launching five new masters in 2022 – Tropical Medicine and Public Health, Portuguese Language and Linguistics, Mathematics for Teachers, Ophthalmology, and Peace and Conflict Studies. The university’s educational offer also includes a master’s degree in Applied Economics.
In November last year, the university held a solemn ceremony with the theme “From the seeds sown, quality and strong national supporters will be produced.” The event is intended to publicize the master’s and doctoral programs to be organized by the institution in the 2023 academic year.
According to UNTL data, this year 138 students are participating in the master’s and doctoral programs.
