DILI, may 8, 2023 (TATOLI) – Timor-Leste National Leader, Xanana Gusmão, was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the American University of Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

Addressing the ceremony, Xanana Gusmão thanked the university for the distinction, receiving “with great humility and honor”, as well as being grateful for the organization of the graduation ceremony. “It is a great privilege for me to visit this modern academic institution in this vibrant capital of Cambodia.”

Gusmão also said that “the Kingdom of Cambodia inspires the whole world and, in particular, Timor-Leste, the youngest neighbor of Southeast Asia. And it inspires not only by its beauty and spirituality but also by its history of overcoming suffering. Strong cultural values, dialogue, and tolerance have made it possible to rebuild a peaceful and promising nation.”

“And it is because we are in a university, surrounded by talented and promising young people, that I say to you: Peace, this precious good, is the most important universal principle. We live in uncertain times when global challenges are baffling,” he said.

Xanana Gusmão also recalled that, despite “the pandemic, the warnings of climate emergencies, the succession of humanitarian and security crises and the increase in social and economic disparities, war is still the most decadent scourge of humanity.”

The former Prime Minister and former President of the Republic used his experience to justify the evils of warlike conflicts: “I speak to you with the knowledge of the facts of those who lived through a quarter of a century of war. The tragedies, sacrifices, and sufferings of war are forever marked in us who experience them, but also in the generations that come to us and in their social and economic development”.

Xanana Gusmão concluded with an appeal for the future, stressing, at the national level, the importance of “putting collective interests above their individual needs again and continuing to fight fervently, now for national development” and, at the international level considering the importance of Timor-Leste, “nothing is discussed about us, without us!”
