DILI, 16 june 2023 (TATOLI) – Red Cross Timor-Leste (RCTL) wished to extend the National Blood Donation Program to other municipalities to ensure the bloodstock is available to respond to emergency needs.

“We wish to expand the blood donation program to the municipality level because, during this period, we only implement the blood donation program in Dili,’’ General Secretary of RCTL, Luis Pedro Pinto told journalists in the RCTL office, in Gercefor, thusday.

He added that RCTL will cooperate with The National Blood Bank (BNS) of Guido Valadares to carry out blood donation mobility at the municipality level.

Pinto acknowledges that RCTL recognized that Timor-Leste suffers a shortage of blood supply, due to the lack of information to the community about blood donation.

Meanwhile, the acting head of the National Blood Bank Unit, Agustina Alves said NHGV through the blood bank unit continues to carry out the blood donation mobility to staff from government institutions, NGOs, and University students to ensure the availability of block stock.

“We recognized that currently, The National Blood Bank (BNS) of Timor-Leste is facing a blood crisis. It is important to cooperate with RCTL to have blood mobility to the municipality level,’’ She said

She also added that Timor-Leste still lacks the equipment and resources to implement blood donation at the municipality level, but the country needs more blood to respond to emergencies.

Regarding this situation, Alves invites all Timorese people to take part in blood donation to save other lives.
