DILI, 23 june 2023 (TATOLI) – Kmanek Haburas Unidade Nasional Timor Oan (KHUNTO) pledged to support the ruling parties, the National Congress for Timorese Reconstruction (CNRT) and the Democratic Party (PD) to realize the campaign promises of revising the Constitution.

“KHUNTO will definitely support the ruling parties to revise the Constitution, as some articles are no longer relevant to the reality and situation of Timor-Leste,” KHUNTO spokesman, Antonio Verdial told Tatoli, today.

Verdial expressed KHUNTO’s preference to change Timor-Leste’s political system from Semi-Presidential to Presidential.

He said the adoption of the presidential system will improve the political system in order to provide good services to the people.

In addition, the Executive Director of the Judicial System Monitoring Programme (JSMP), Ana Paula Marçal also called on the new parliament to have a revision to Constitution within its five-year mandate.

She said the ruling parties must realize their campaign promises on the amendment of the lifelong pension law, which only benefited a small group of people.

“From day one, we have always advocated for the amendment of lifelong pension law and the revision of the Constitution. These are two of the main issues we recommend the new parliament to consider during its five-year mandate,” Marçal said after the swearing-in ceremony of the new 65 MPs at the National Parliament, on thursday.

Marçal said amendment to the lifelong pension law is necessary to ensure equal treatment to all citizens in the country.
