DILI, 29 june 2023 (TATOLI)—The President of the Republic, José Ramos Horta, said that the German government agreed to accept Timorese workers to work in Germany.
Horta made his statement after returning from a state visit to the Federal Republic of Germany on 25-26 June 2023.
“Germany has agreed to accept Timorese workers to work in Germany, but all processes must go through a contract with the owner of the company,” President Horta said at a press conference at Dili’s Nicolau Lobato International Airport, Wednesday.
According to the Head of State, the Government will draw up a formal cooperation agreement with the German Government in the program for sending workers to Germany using Timor-Leste passports.
“Before leaving for Germany, workers must attend professional training, because the German government wants technical training,” said Horta.
Meanwhile, President Horta also asked Germany to support Professional Engineering schools in Timor-Leste, to improve the curriculum of schools such as in Fatumaca, Baucau Municipality by providing adequate equipment.
“Professional Technical Training will be conducted in Timor-Leste and Germany,” he said.
Regarding the formal agreement between both Governments, Horta will ask the 9th Constitutional Government to arrange an agreement to make contact with the German Embassies for Indonesia and Timor-Leste.
“I will make direct contact with several companies in Germany to accept TL workers. Because, if you want to leave, you must sign the contract with the company or should have the company contract. This is a government regulation that has just been issued and can provide opportunities for East Timorese workers,” said President Horta.
