DILI, 24 july 2023 (TATOLI)- Minister of Foreign Affairs of Singapore, Vivian Balakrishnan met today with Timor-Leste’s President of Republic, José Ramos Horta to discuss Timor-Leste’s preparation for ASEAN membership.

Singapore’s MoFA, Vivian Balakrishnan said: “It was a privileged moment for me to meet with President Republic of Timor -Leste José Ramos Horta and discussed country development, especially discuss three main issues, Child Health, Jobs opportunities, and Timor-Leste membership of ASEAN, “Vivian Balakrishnan told journalists in President Palace, Bairru Pité, this Monday

Singapore’s Foreign Minister also described Timorese President, José Ramos Horta as an admirable leader, saying President Horta has many friends in Singapore to support Timorese people in getting job opportunities when Timor-Leste joins ASEAN members.

He said he is excited to hear the president’s views in ten years or a century of the development of Timor-Leste: “We are very passionate with this deep conversation. I think this time is a great opportunity for Timor-Leste,” he concluded.

Previously at the meeting between Singapore Prime Minister, Lee Hsien Loong and Timor-Leste Former Prime Minister, Taur Matan Ruak, Singapore had reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Timor-Leste in its preparation for ASEAN membership. 

Prime Minister Loong also said Singapore was delighted with Timor-Leste’s acceptance in principle of joining the organization, also available to support the process as needed where possible and help complete the membership criteria.

At one point in their conversation, PM Loong said Singapore will Look forward to Timorese officials attending courses under the “Singapore – Timor-Leste ASEAN Readiness Support” (STARS) package.
