DILI, 31 October 2023 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic, José Ramos Horta, said that the war between Israel and Hamas has caused great concern around the world, as the number of victims continues to rise, especially children and women.
The Head of State expressed his sadness at the situation in Gaza, where many innocent babies and women have lost their lives as a result of the war. Hospitals, schools and other buildings have been completely destroyed, making life difficult for civilians on the ground.
“I spoke to several world leaders during my state visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and they all expressed their concern about the war and are making desperate efforts to end the conflict,” said Horta.
Horta said he would support 100 percent any decision taken by the United Nations to find a solution to the war, calling on the member states of ASEAN, the CPLP, and the g7+ to support the UN in finding a solution to the war.
AP news reported that over 1,400 people have died on the Israeli side, mainly civilians killed during Hamas’ initial attack, also an unprecedented figure. Nineteen Israeli soldiers have been killed in Gaza since the start of the ground operation. Meanwhile, the Palestinian death toll rose above 9,000.
Global leaders raised pressure on Israel to ease its siege of Gaza and at least briefly halt its attacks in order to aid civilians.
Many countries have pledged unwavering support for the victims of the war as civilians are starving.
Protesters rallied around the world demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
