DILI, 07 november 2023 (TATOLI) – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation (MoFAC) will establish more new embassies and a consulate abroad.

The Vice-Minister for ASEAN Affairs, Milena Maria da Costa Rangel, made the comments on the sidelines of the presentation of the MoFAC’s 2024 Fiscal budget to the Budget Review Committee at the Ministry of Finance.

“We submitted a proposal requesting an additional US$5 million, as the government, through MoFAC, had prioritized in its plan the establishment of two embassies in Angola and India, as well as a consulate in Northern Ireland,” said Rangel.

She said that the opening of the country’s new embassies and consulate abroad is important for strengthening diplomatic ties.

Rangel said that the US$30 million approved for MoFAC’s next year program would prioritize the strengthening of institutions, and Timor-Leste’s foreign policy.

Last month, in a meeting between the Indian Foreign Minister, Rajkumar Ranjan Singh, and his Timorese counterpart, Bendito Freitas, discussed the possibility of establishing India’s embassy in Dili, in fulfillment of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s declaration at the ASEAN Summit.

With regard to the establishment of a consulate in Northern Ireland, in april last year, the former minister Adaljiza Magno had said that the establishment of a consulate in Northern Ireland was important in order to protect and provide consular services to the Timorese.
