DILI, 26 november 2023 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic, José Ramos Horta is going to pardon 30 prisoners and decorate 100 teachers during the celebration of the 48th anniversary of the Proclamation of Independence Day, which will take place on 28 november, in Dili.

The Head of State said that the Ministry of Justice had presented a list of more than 30 prisoners who could be pardoned at the time of the celebration.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education also submitted a list of 100 teachers to be honored at the event.

“I’m going to pardon these prisoners. I have consulted the heads of the Becora, Suai, and Ermera prisons,” said Horta at the Palace of President, in Dili.

Last year, the Ministry of Justice presented a list of 40 prisoners to be pardoned by the President of the Republic during the celebration of the 47th anniversary of the Proclamation of Independence Day.

According to the law, the President of the Republic has the authority to pardon twice a year – once on the commemoration of the Restoration of Independence, on 20 May, and once on the Proclamation of Independence Day, on 28 November.

With regard to the decoration of teachers, the President of the Republic said that he would honor and value the contribution of teachers to the education sector with more than 50 years of career.

Finally, the Head of State also recalled that he would “decorate some political personalities, namely former officials as well as academics to recognize their dedication to the struggle for the liberation of East Timor”.
