Horta highlights importance of maritime security to protect TL’s marine life

DILI, 12 january 2024 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic, José Ramos Horta, raise the importance of the Naval Component in protecting Timor-Leste’s marine life and biodiversity.

President Horta made the comments on friday to mark the 22nd anniversary of the Naval Component of the Timor-Leste Defense Force (F-FDTL).

The Head of State spoke about the need to protect marine environments and biodiversity, noting Timor-Leste’s strategic location in the Coral Triangle.

President Horta also explained the opportunities to modernize the Naval Component through the use of drone and satellite technologies for surveillance and monitoring Timor-Leste’s water.

In his speech, President Horta thanked international partners for strengthening the Naval Component’s capabilities and emphasized the importance of continued regional cooperation to address maritime security threats such as piracy, smuggling, and trafficking.

The President highlighted the significant challenges Timor-Leste faces including limited financial, technical and human resources.

Additionally, he appealed for new public-private partnerships with friendly nations to establish a naval equipment maintenance center in Timor-Leste that could provide important skills training.

Horta concluded his remarks by renewing commitments to continue investing in developing the Naval Component’s capabilities to ensure maritime security, which he considers vital for the nation’s sustainable development and prosperity.
