UNSW expresses committment to support TL’s aquaculture development program

DILI, 16 january 2024 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic, Jose Ramos Horta met with aquaculture experts, Leslie Lawrence and Jesmond Sammut from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) to discuss collaboration on an aquaculture development program for Timor-Leste.

The experts outlined a plan to work with the local organization PERMATIL on spring restoration projects to expand aquaculture activities and boost nutrition and economic growth.

Horta expressed strong support for the initiative, highlighting the potential for aquaculture to improve livelihoods and food security.

He pledged to help secure funding for expanded research and training in this field.

In the coming months, the University of New South Wales will partner with the Universidade Nacional Timor Lorosa’e (UNTL) and Dili Institute of Technology to develop curriculum and programs related to aquaculture.

The spring restoration efforts aim to conserve spring and establish sustainable aquaculture practices. This will create jobs and increase the production of fish and other high-protein foods.

The Head of State emphasized the need for Timor-Leste to continue diversifying its economy and increasing domestic food production.
