Timor-Leste and Portugal discuss strengthening defense cooperation

DILI, 02 february 2024 (TATOLI) – As part of the celebrations for the 23rd anniversary of Timorese National Defense Force (F-FDTL), the Naval Commander of the Portuguese Navy, Vice Admiral Nuno Chaves Ferreira, met with the Chief of Staff of the Timorese Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Falur Rate Laek, to discuss cooperation in the area of defense between the two countries.

Vice Admiral Nuno Chaves Ferreira revealed that he had presented a proposal for cooperation, in which several elements of the F-FDTL would be included in a pilot project that Portugal has in São Tomé and Príncipe.

“We have a ship designed in São Tomé and Príncipe in which the garrisons are mixed, so I think it could be an interesting aspect for us to replicate with Timorese troops joining a Portuguese ship in which the garrisons would be half Portuguese and half Timorese,” he concluded.

Falur Rate Laek said: “During the meeting, the Portuguese Vice-Admiral reiterated his commitment to strengthening cooperation in military training, military assistance, and so on.
