President Horta congratulates Prabowo Subianto on his landslide victory in Presidential Elections

DILi, 19 february 2024 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic, Jose Ramos Horta has called the newly elected president of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto to congratulate him on his landslide victory in the February 14 Presidential Elections.

“I just had a conversation with President Prabowo this afternoon and conveyed my congratulations to him on his landslide victory in the Indonesian presidential elections,” President Horta told media at the Presidential Palace in Dili today.

Horta said that during the conversation he invited the newly elected Indonesian President to visit Timor-Leste in the near future.

“He accepted my invitation and said that he would certainly visit Timor-Leste, probably before his official inauguration. President Prabowo also invited me to visit Indonesia under his leadership as President of the Republic,” said Horta.

Both Presidents expressed their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and contributing to keeping peace and stability in the region.

Horta said that President Prabowo knows Timor-Leste well, hoping the relationship between the two countries would continue to grow stronger under President Prabowo and Gusmão’s leadership.

Timor-Leste and Indonesia enjoy an excellent relationship and are actively engaged in wide-range cooperation.

Indonesia has been a forefront advocate of Timor-Leste ASEAN Membership and has provided a significant amount of scholarships and capacity-building programs for Timor-Leste’s youth and students, as well as civil servants, diplomats, police and military personnel.

Indonesia remains Timor-Leste’s most important trading partner and Timorese is number four in visitors to Indonesia.

Prabowo-Gibran won a landslide victory in Timor-Leste, securing 61.6 percent of the vote, while Ganjar Pranowo–Mahfud MD received 28.9 percent and Anies Baswedan–Muhaimin Iskandar only got 9.0 percent.

Fidelis Ase Olin, Representative of the Indonesian Overseas Election Committee (PPLN) in Dili, informed that Prabowo-Gibran got 2,106 votes. Ganjar-Mahfud received 987 votes, and Anies-Muhaimin had 307 votes.

East Asia Forum reported that after four years of preparation and intense campaigning, the Indonesian presidential election concluded with a landslide victory for Prabowo Subianto, the country’s current defense minister, securing approximately 58 percent of the votes.
