Authorities seize US$160 of counterfeit coins
DILI, 12 march 2024 (TATOLI) – The Central Bank of Timor-Leste (BCTL) has identified US$160 of counterfeit coins (0.50 cent), following reports circulating on social media about the circulation of the coins in the country.
According to the Deputy Governor of the BCTL, Sara Lobo Brites, users should always check the coins when they receive them, especially those from the 2013 series.
“The fake coins don’t have graphic accents in the words REPÚBLICA and DEMOCRÁTICA and are more golden than the real ones,” so they can be easily identified if users look closely.
She emphasized that the BCTL will collaborate with all banking institutions and the Criminal Investigation Police so that all fake coins can be seized and those responsible for counterfeiting identified.
