DILI, 23 april 2024 (TATOLI) – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, under the Office of the Vice Minister, along with the UN Women in Dili, organized a workshop on gender equality, women, peace, and security.

The workshop aims to strengthen the MNEC’s capacity to implement national commitments in the international and regional normative instruments on gender equality and women’s rights, including the CEDAW and the Concluding Observation, UNSCR 1325, and other ASEAN’s policies and strategies on gender equality.

The event also aimed to provide training to MoFAC focal points and technical staff involved in the implementation of the second NAP 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security (WPS), increase their understanding of WPS, and strengthen their capacity in the NAP 1325 implementation, monitoring, and reporting.

A number of officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation attended the two-day (april 22-23) workshop, which took place at the Salão Nobre MNEC.

Flora Wai Chan, International Consultant on WPS, said UN Women will continue to support the government in strengthening its constitutional capacity to lead, coordinate, implement, and monitor the 1325 NAP.

On february 15th, 2024, the 9th Constitutional Government, with the support of UN Women, officially launched the second generation of the National Action Plan (2024-2028) to implement UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security (NAP 1325).

UN Women is grateful for the partnership and trust of MoFAC and its office for ASEAN Affairs in collaborating to promote gender equality and women’s leadership as the country moves towards sustainable development, peace, and greater regional and international integration.

Felizarda Da Conceicão De Jesus, one of the participants in the event, said that the topics on gender equality are very important and will help to combat gender inequality in the country.

NAP 1325 is a five-year national strategy to integrate gender equality and women’s leadership into all aspects of conflict prevention and resolution, peacebuilding, post-conflict recovery, and humanitarian response in Timor-Leste.

Resolution 1325 was the first resolution on Women, Peace, and Security unanimously adopted by the UN Security Council on October 31st, 2000. This global normative framework highlights the importance of women’s active participation and leadership as agents in promoting peace and security.

Timor-Leste, recognizing the valuable contribution of women in promoting peace and sustainable development throughout its history, became the third country in Southeast Asia to develop a National Action Plan on Women, Peace, and Security (2016-2020).
