DILI, 07 may 2024 (TATOLI) – The spouses of ambassadors from multiple countries who live and reside in Timor-Leste met with the President of the Republic, Jose Ramos Horta to express their commitment to supporting the Presidency of the Republic’s program on combating childhood malnutrition.

The Presidency’s program to combat malnutrition, through Katina Matak at the Presidential Palace, has been providing free nutritious food to thousands of Timorese children to improve their nutrition.

During the meeting, the 15 wives of the ambassadors in Timor-Leste told President Horta that, as mothers, they are ready to support and improve the nutrition of children in the country.

The wife of the Indonesian Ambassador to Timor Leste, Flantina Sari Mutiara Silalahi, said that the meeting with the Head of State was to see the condition of Kantina Matak which has been providing free nutritious food for children.

“We look forward to supporting President Horta’s program to prevent and combat malnutrition in the country,” Silalahi told reporters at the Presidential Palace in Dili today. “We are pleased to meet with the President himself to talk about malnutrition issues and how to make efforts together to combat malnutrition in the country.”

President Horta raised the importance of preparing and providing nutritious food for children since malnutrition in Timor-Leste is among the highest in the Southeast Asian region.

Kantina Matak which was established by President Horta himself, provides free nutritious food to nearly 800 children every day.

One in two children in Timor-Leste under five years of age are stunted — one of the highest rates of stunting in the world. One in 24 children in Timor-Leste will not live to see their fifth birthday and 38 per cent of children under five years of age are underweight, according to UNICEF.
