Angola’s new ambassador presents credentials to President Horta

DILI, 24 may 2024 (TATOLI) – The new Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Angola to Timor-Leste, José Andrade de Lemos, on thursday, presented his Letter of Credence to the President of the Republic, Jose Ramos Horta.

The credentialing ceremony took place at the President Nicolau Lobato Palace in Dili.

Ambassador José Andrade de Lemos is an accomplished Angolan diplomat with a career spanning over three decades. 

He has served as a Mentor at the Office of the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs (SSFA) and as Ambassador of Angola to the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, and Bahrain.

Timor-Leste and Angola have committed to bolstering cooperation within the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) framework. Timor-Leste particularly recognizes Angola’s expertise in the oil and gas sector.

Angola is set to become the first Portuguese-speaking African country to open an embassy in Timor-Leste, further cementing diplomatic relations between the two nations.

Cooperation between the two countries also extends to regional affairs, including the South China Sea maritime dispute, where Timor-Leste supports peaceful resolutions through diplomacy.

The nations mutually backed each other’s multilateral endeavors including Timor-Leste’s ASEAN integration efforts and Angola’s stance on Western Sahara.

President Ramos-Horta expressed confidence that Ambassador José Andrade de Lemos’ appointment will elevate and fortify the bonds of friendship and cooperation between Timor-Leste and Angola.
