DILI, 09 july 2024 (TATOLI) – Plan International Timor-Leste through the Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) program held the first national dialogue between Government Institutions, religious leaders, youths, human rights activists, and Civil Society on health issues and Sexual reproductive rights of young people in Timor-Leste.

The aim of the dialogue is to provide space, support, and guidance to young people as they make their own advocacy efforts and advance policies that directly affect their sexual health and reproductive rights. This initiative empowers young people by enhancing their knowledge of sexual health and reproductive rights. It also influences policymakers on relevant issues, including reducing teenage pregnancy rates, expanding access to youth-friendly services, ensuring the availability and appropriateness of menstrual hygiene provisions, and improving policies, frameworks, and guidelines to promote human rights. This effort aligns with the ambition of SDG 2030: “Leave no one behind.”

“Inclusive family planning means leaving no one behind— whether adults, married or single, people with disabilities, or LGBTQI+—to avoid creating inequality in the community. This advocacy is crucial to represent the voices of all communities, addressing their concerns and suggestions to improve the issues they face. It aims to enhance or strengthen family planning policies for the welfare of individuals within a country.” told Dominique Tayza Quety Lay, Youth activist and student of the National University of Timor-Leste.

“We must recognize that Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) are not additional or selective rights for certain segments of the population. SRHR is essential for achieving optimal development for all of society, including young people in all their diversity. Young people from key populations also face significant SRHR challenges, which must be addressed to ensure inclusive and equitable development. By addressing these challenges, we can empower young people to make informed decisions about their health and well-being, ultimately contributing to a healthier and more just society. It is crucial to integrate SRHR into broader health and development policies to leave no one behind and to promote the welfare of all individuals.” Said Agostinha Gomes Madeira, Manager of Feto nia Asaun ba Dezenvovlvimentu.

“Plan International Timor-Leste continues its commitment to empowering girls, young women, and men as champions for change to enjoy their right to sexual and reproductive health,” Said Dillyana Ximines, County Director of Plan International Timor-Leste”.
