Horta meets with the Japanese Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs

DILI, 13 august 2024 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic, Jose Ramos Horta, Jose Ramos Horta held a bilateral meeting with the Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, KOMURA Masahiro, at the Nicolau Lobato Presidential Palace.

During the bilateral meeting, Horta and Masahiro discussed cooperation between Timor-Leste and Japan on infrastructure development, economic diversification, and human resource capacity building.

Discussions also covered Japan’s continued support for Timor-Leste’s ASEAN accession process and the upcoming signing of an agreement to improve Guido Valadares National Hospital.

Both leaders also touched on the growing Japanese private sector investment in Timor-Leste, including projects by Tsuneishi Shipbuilding and INPEX Corporation.

President Horta said that Japan and Timor-Leste: “Our nations share a deep and enduring friendship, one that has been instrumental in our journey of peace and nation-building. Japan’s unwavering support has been a cornerstone of our progress. We look forward to strengthening our ties and exploring new avenues of cooperation that will benefit both our nations and contribute to regional prosperity.”

Masahiro’s visit to the country marks a significant step in strengthening the comprehensive partnership between Timor-Leste and Japan.

This visit builds on the momentum of Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão’s productive trip to Japan in December 2023 and reflects the deep friendship between the two nations. Timor-Leste looks forward to further expanding its comprehensive partnership with Japan in the years ahead.
