DILI, 22 august 2024 (TATOLI) – China Harbour Engineering Company Ltd (CHEC) handed over the transport and material for waste prevention project to the Government of Timor-Leste.
The handover ceremony took place in the village of Tibar, in the municipality of Liquiça, and was attended by the President of the Republic, José Ramos Horta.
This Government project aims to facilitate waste collection with modern equipment, transport waste from the capital Dili to Tibar, and recycle waste with the objective of solving the waste problem in Dili city.
The Head of State, in his intervention, said that it’s not only about organized collection through means, especially with modern heavy equipment, but more importantly, it’s about educating citizens to dispose of waste in an organized manner in its proper place.
Horta also requested routine maintenance of the transport equipment for waste collection to continue operations, as the President of the Republic considers that a major problem is the lack of maintenance and control of equipment in almost all public institutions, thus causing many failures in State programs in the infrastructure area.
He also expressed his appreciation for the previous Government led by former Prime Minister Taur Matan Ruak, who initiated the referred project, and for the current government’s continuation of the project for a more beautiful Dili city through waste prevention.
Meanwhile, the Government has contracted the international company China Harbour Ltd. in partnership with the local company PAX to carry out the work, starting from bringing in heavy equipment for collection, including service attendance for waste collection in the Capital Dili and Tibar Landfill.
