British Ambassador Dominic Jermey attends Timor-Leste’s 25th Referendum celebrations

DILI, 30 august 2024 (TATOLI) The United Kingdom’s Ambassador to Timor-Leste, Dominic Jermey, will participate in Timor-Leste’s 25th Referendum celebrations on friday, 30 August 2024.

During his visit, Ambassador Dominic Jermey met the Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão, President José Ramos Horta, and international partners to discuss steps to enhance the collaboration with the Timor-Leste government.

Through an official press release, the British Ambassador to Timor-Leste, Dominic Jermey, recounted his participation to see first-hand the referendum process that took place in Timor-Leste on 30 August 1999.

“I first arrived in Dili on a UN aircraft almost 25 years ago when the international community came together to rebuild and establish a state under the leadership of the UN, in support of the people of Timor-Leste,” he said.

Jermey was honored to be present in Timor in 1999 as the UK Representative, the only Permanent Member of the Security Council to help support the hopes, dreams, and aspirations of the Timorese people.

“And today I am delighted to be back in Dili and honored to have the opportunity to attend the 25th anniversary of the Peoples Consultation on 30 August, together with our friends in Timor-Leste and our international partners,” he said.

He emphasized that the UK”s partnership with Timor-Leste continues to grow, with a focus on economic development, health and nutrition, as well as climate adaptation and education, and wants Timor-Leste to develop into a stable and prosperous country, along with its work in the international arena.

The UK supports Timor-Leste’s entry into the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) bloc as a key ally in aligning development, political, and security priorities.

“On behalf of the UK Government, I would like to congratulate the people of Timor-Leste on the 25th anniversary of the general election,” he concluded.
