Portuguese journalists met with SECOMS to explore future cooperation in the media sector

DILI, 06 september 2024 (TATOLI) – Eight Portuguese journalists who received awards from Timor-Leste through President José Ramos-Horta met with the Secretary of State for Social Communications (SECOMS), Expedito Ximenes, to discuss future cooperation in the sector of media.

On this occasion, SECOMS thanked the eight journalists from Portugal who contributed to publicizing the events of the day of the popular consultation to exchange views on the state of the media in Timor-Leste and explore possibilities for exchanges in the field of news production between the two countries.

In general, the Portuguese journalists referred to what they consider to be the problems of modern society in journalistic writing: a lack of honesty and factuality and, basically, a distrust of the reliability of news. In particular, Paulo Nogueira, a journalist from Agência Lusa, emphasized the need for journalists to confirm information from official sources to combat the misinformation on social media.

He added that it is very important for journalists to work, to carry out their profession well, so that in the end, the public can recognize the work of journalists.

Paulo Nogueira observed that Timor-Leste has made tremendous progress. He justified this by the fact that the country has news agencies, public and private television, and other media organizations that publish information in several languages, including news in Portuguese.

At the same place, Expedito Ximenes believes that the work of Portuguese journalists was very important for self-determination in Timor-Leste, where Portuguese journalists played an active role in archiving the file of photos and moving images related to journalistic activities that took place in Timor-Leste during the Indonesian occupation, to be deposited in the national archive, and also to contribute to the dissemination of information produced by the state media Tatoli Agency, including Radio and Television of Timor-Leste (RTTL).
