Timorese worker dies after motorbike crash in South Korea

DILI, 23 january 2025 (TATOLI) – A Timorese worker, José António Rebelo da Silva has died following a motorbike crash in South Korea’s capital, Seoul.

José António Rebelo da Silva, 29, who had been undergoing treatment for four months, died last Saturday at Daejeon Sun Hospital.

“Silva got in a terrible accident on september 1, 2024, and was taken to Daejeon Sun Hospital in a serious condition and died four months later,” said Timorese Attaché in South Korea, Calisto Pacheco.

Silve left for South Korea on 8 january 2019 to work for SJ Family company in Gyeonggi province. In June 2022, he moved to work with the FR Koria company in the city of Nonsan, Chungcheong province

Secretary of State for Vocational Training and Employment (SEFOPE), in coordination with the Timor-Leste’s Embassy in South Korea, is working on the repatriation of the body of José António Rebelo.

In 2023, two Timorese workers, Florindo de Araújo de Fátima and Gracildo Soares da Silva, also died in a road accident. Both workers are from Ainaro Municipality.
