DILI, 11 February 2025 (TATOLI) – The Ministry of Education’s Department for Evaluation, Licensing, and Accreditation (GALA-Tetun) has decided to temporarily halt the acceptance of new licensing applications from international pre-school, primary, and secondary schools.

GALA’s coordinator, Antonio Tomas Maia, said that this year, the Ministry of Education only accepted applications from private schools and that “applications from international schools would not be accepted.”

This decision will allow MoE to evaluate schools to ensure they meet quality standards in order to improve the quality of education in Timor-Leste.

GALA would evaluate the school’s compliance with MoE requirements, including curriculum and planning, and school management and resources.

From 2020 to 2023, the MoE issued more than 15 accreditations and licenses to international schools in the country.

Meanwhile, last year, the Ministry of Education issued accreditations and licenses to 15 schools, including four preschools, six primary schools, four secondary schools, and one technical and vocational high school.”
