DILI, 12 February 2025 (TATOLI) – The Timorese nun Guilhermina Marçal will receive an Honorary Doctorate in Human Rights, Theology, and Philosophy from an American international university in Ethiopia.
The Honorary Doctorate will be conferred to Sister Marçal in Ethiopia next week in recognition of her dedication and contribution to the fight for human rights in the country.
“This week, I will be traveling to Ethiopia to receive the Honorary Doctorate,” Sister Marçal told reporters after meeting President Horta at the Presidential Palace on Tuesday.
Sister Marçal is known for her role in East Timor’s struggle for independence and for her efforts in supporting women’s and children’s rights in the country.
In 2023, Sister Marçal was one of the 14 members appointed by the President of the Republic as new members of the Council of State and new members of the Superior Council of Defense and Security Council (KSDS).
She is the current Provincial superior of the Canossian Sisters in Dili.
Marçal studied spiritual theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. She was born in Manufahi, in 1958.
