WHO, KOICA and INSP-TL launch Frontline Field Epidemiology Training Program

DILI, 17 February 2025 (TATOLI) – WHO, in collaboration with KOICA supported the National Institute of Public Health (INSP-TL) in launching the Frontline Field Epidemiology Training Program.

This program aimed to strengthen preparedness and response to infectious diseases in Timor-Leste. With support from the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and WHO Timor-Leste, the initiative will enhance the skills of frontline health workers.

The event was honored by the presence of Flávio Brandão Mendes de Araújo, Vice Minister of Health for the Operationalization of Hospitals, Youn Hwa Kang, Country Director of KOICA Timor-Leste, Arvind Mathur, WHO Timor-Leste Representative, and Merita Monteiro, President of INSP-TL.

“Today, I am immensely delighted and thrilled to announce that Timor-Leste, through collaboration of the Ministry of Health and INSPTL, is set to launch its very own frontline FETP,” said WHO Representative to Timor-Leste, Arvind Mathur, in Dili, today. 

Mathur said: “This initiative will result in the training of a minimum of 28 frontline field epidemiologists this year.”

Over the next three months, these epidemiologists will learn from experts of INSPTL, MOH and WHO in the FETP, engage in stimulating discussions, and explore innovative epidemiological approaches to current and emerging public health issues in Timor-Leste.

Their work will not only safeguard local communities but will also contribute to protecting and promoting people’s health across the globe in this interconnected world.

“I am proud that WHO Timor-Leste with Regional Office could work with INSP-TL on this course and developed the Trainers.  I would like to express my gratitude to the trainers from INSPTL. Building on your rich experience and knowledge, let us propel our efforts toward our goal of achieving a healthy Timorese population in a healthy Timor-Leste,” said Mathur. “I encourage all participants to make the most of this opportunity to learn, connect, and inspire one another.”

At the same place, KOICA Director, Youn Hwa Kang said the launch of the FETP marking a significant milestone in enhancing Timor-Leste’s health staff’s capabilities in surveillance and response systems.

“As the Country Director of KOICA Timor-Leste, I am filled with hope and excitement to see how this training will increase the capabilities of our health professionals and improve the quality of care for our community. The skills and knowledge gained here will have a lasting impact on our healthcare system, making us better prepared for future health challenges,” she said.

At the same place, the President of INSP-TL, Merita Monteiro, also emphasized the importance of training professionals to reduce the risk of outbreaks.
