DILI, 22 February 2025 (TATOLI) – Pope Francis had a restfull night the morning after his medical team held a press conference on Friday from the Rome Hospital, where he is being treated for bilateral pneumonia.

At the press conference, Members of Pope Francis’ medical team announced that the Holy Father is not “in danger of death”, but he is also not fully “out of danger”, and will remain in hospital for treatment, the Vatican reported.

The medical team said that Pope Francis was in good mood: “He is joking as much as usual, and has even begun working again.”

Dr Sergio Alfieri, the head of the team taking care of the Pope, and Dr Luigi Carbone, the Vice-Director of the Vatican’s healthcare service, said that the Pope would be hospitalized for “at least” the entirety of the next week.

“Dr Alfieri emphasized that the Pope is not attached to a ventilator, although he is still struggling with his breathing and consequently keeping his physical movements limited,” according to the Vatican News.

The doctors told reporters that their greatest fear is that there is a risk that the germs in the Pope’s respiratory tract might pass into his bloodstream, causing sepsis.

On Tuesday (18/02), the Holy See Press Office revealed that Pope Francis has pneumonia in both his lungs following a CT scan.

Catholic leaders and faithful in Timor-Leste, including the Vatican ambassador, Monsignor Marco Sprizzi, united in prayer for Pope Francis after he was diagnosed with pneumonia on Tuesday.

Pope Francis visited Timor-Leste in September 2024, becoming the first pope to visit the country since John Paul II in 1989.

The visit was a significant moment for the country, which gained independence from Indonesia in 2002.

The peak of Pope Francis’s historic visit to Timor-Leste was the celebration of Holy Mass in Tasi Tolu, attended by an estimated 600,000 faithful—almost half of the Timorese population.
