President Horta to participate in ASEAN Future Forum 2025 in Vietnam

DIlI, 24 February 2025 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic, Jose Ramos Horta has embarked on a working visit to Vietnam from February 24-26, 2025, to participate in the ASEAN Future Forum 2025. The Forum, themed “Building a United, Inclusive, and Resilient ASEAN Amidst Global Transformations,” brings together regional leaders to discuss the future of ASEAN and address key challenges facing the region.

During his working visit, President Horta will engage in high-level bilateral meetings with Vietnamese leadership, including His Excellency Luong Cuong, President of Vietnam, and His Excellency To Lam, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam. These meetings will strengthen the diplomatic ties between Timor-Leste and Vietnam while advancing discussions on regional cooperation and development.

At the ASEAN Future Forum, the Head of State will deliver keynote remarks at the Forum’s opening ceremony and participate in a high-level Q&A session alongside: Prime Minister of Vietnam, H.E. Pham Minh Chinh, Prime Minister of Malaysia, Rt. Hon. Dato’ Seri Anwar bin Ibrahim, and Prime Minister of New Zealand, Rt. Hon. Christopher Luxon

The ASEAN Future Forum 2025 serves as a significant platform for regional dialogue on critical issues including technological advancement, comprehensive security, and ASEAN’s role in an increasingly complex global landscape.

Timor-Leste’s participation in the Forum underscores its commitment to regional integration and its ongoing journey toward ASEAN membership. The country continues to make significant progress in its accession process.

“The ASEAN Future Forum represents a crucial platform for dialogue and collaboration as we work towards building a more integrated and resilient Southeast Asia,” said President Ramos-Horta. “Timor-Leste’s participation reflects our unwavering commitment to regional cooperation and our readiness to contribute meaningfully to ASEAN’s shared vision for sustainable development and prosperity. As we progress in our ASEAN accession journey, we look forward to working closely with our neighbors to address common challenges and seize opportunities for collective growth.”

As a nation committed to sustainable development and enhanced regional cooperation, Timor-Leste looks forward to contributing to discussions on climate change, energy transition, and strengthening regional resilience through collective action and collaboration.

The President’s delegation includes senior government officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, demonstrating Timor-Leste’s strong commitment to engaging with regional partners and contributing to ASEAN’s shared vision for the future.
