DILI, 17 February 2025 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic, Jose Ramos Horta extended his warmest congratulations to His Imperial Majesty Emperor Naruhito of Japan on the occasion of his 65th birthday, highlighting the strong bilateral relations between Timor-Leste and Japan.

“It is a real pleasure to be here this evening among so many friends of Japan, and I join everyone in extending my warmest congratulations and best wishes for the well-being and long life of His Imperial Majesty NARUHITO,” said Horta at the Emperor’s Birthday Reception, held at the Japanese Embassy, in Dili, today.

Hundreds of Japanese nationals gathered at the Japanese Embassy to celebrate the 65th birthday of His Majesty the Emperor of Japan, which also marks the 6th anniversary of His Imperial Majesty’s accession to the throne as Japan’s 126th Emperor.

Horta said that Timor-Leste and Japan share common values rooted in democracy, individual freedoms, respect for human rights, and the rule of law.

Horta thanked Japan for being a key partner in Timor-Leste’s development, “making invaluable contributions to our nation’s progress—as a Japanese proverb says, “As a friend, walk by my side.” Indeed, Japan has always been a steadfast friend of Timor-Leste.”

“Timor-Leste is also grateful for Japan’s unwavering support for our ASEAN membership, particularly through capacity-building initiatives facilitated by JICA. These efforts help Timor-Leste meet the requirements outlined in ASEAN’s Roadmap for Membership,” added Horta.

Horta highlighted some key areas in which Japan continues to support Timor-Leste, including Healthcare Infrastructure, Shipbuilding and Maritime Development, Infrastructure and Disaster Response, Defence Cooperation, Media and Communications, Economic and Social Development, Workforce Development, and Education.

In addition, the President acknowledged Japan’s sustained commitment to international development and peace, noting its significant contributions to the United Nations and other multilateral institutions. He expressed gratitude for the continuous support provided by successive Japanese governments and the Japanese people to Timor-Leste.
