Timor-Leste announces national mourning for the death of Pope Francis

DILI, 21 April 2025 (TATOLI) – The Vice Prime Minister, Minister of Social Affairs Coordination, and Minister of Rural Development and Community Housing, Mariano Assanami Sabino, representing the Government of Timor-Leste, announced a national mourning for the death of Pope Francis, which will take place during the upcoming week.

He stated that the national mourning will be discussed at the Council of Ministers tomorrow. “Tomorrow, at the Council of Ministers, we will decree national mourning for the Catholic community, priests, and nuns to hold prayers during this week in honor of Pope Francis, and we will also lower the flag during the national mourning period,” the official informed journalists at the Government Palace this evening.

He called for prayers, reflecting on Pope Francis’ legacy, and invited the public to honor his words.

“The Government is providing an opportunity for people to gather at the Tasi-Tolu Sanctuary in Dili, where they can hold prayers and mass for the Pope,” he emphasized.

He added: “At this moment, our thoughts are with the Pope’s visit to Timor-Leste, which inspired and gave a powerful message that we must take care of our children, youth, and the most vulnerable in order to continue developing the future of Timor-Leste by investing in our children and youth.”

On behalf of the government, he expressed deep condolences. “We all stand together with the government to extend our sincere condolences to the Catholic Church and the Catholic family worldwide, and to all those who received his message of honor and glory.”

The Minister noted that Pope Francis was a figure who dignified humanity and always spoke for social justice. “His words and actions continue to inspire us towards peace, stability in the world, and the promotion of human fraternity.”

From the Republic of Bulgaria, the President, José Ramos-Horta, also expressed condolences for the death of Pope Francis.

The Head of State said that Pope Francis was a significant figure in world history and within Christianity, particularly for marginalized people and the poor. He was also a pioneer for peace in nations affected by conflict, striving to resist powers that oppressed weaker nations.

“We all remember Pope Francis’ visit to Timor-Leste last September. His final words before leaving Dili by plane to return to Rome were to urge us to care for the people of Timor-Leste,” Horta noted.
