DILI, 07 May 2025 (TATOLI) – Timor-Leste’s President and Nobel Peace Laureate, Jose Ramos Horta extended his warmest congratulations to Friedrich Merz on his election as Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany on May 6, 2025.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz has been serving as the leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) since January 2022, leading the CDU/ CSU parliamentary group as Leader of the Opposition in the Bundestag from February 2022 to May 2025. On May 6, 2025, Merz was elected Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany.
In a congratulatory letter addressed to the new German leader today, President Horta said: “I wish to extend to Your Excellency my warmest congratulations on your election, on 6 May 2025, as Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany. Your election to the leadership of Europe’s largest economy reflects the trust placed in your vision, perseverance, and ability to lead the country at a particularly challenging time for Germany, Europe, and the world.”
Horta is confident that under Merz’s leadership, Germany will continue to play an essential role as a pillar of stability and a driving force for cohesion within the European Union and in the broader international order.
The Head of State emphasized the deep value that Timor-Leste places on its friendship and cooperation with the Federal Republic of Germany, grounded in shared principles of respect for human rights, the self-determination of peoples, and sustainable development.
Timor-Leste reaffirms its full readiness to further strengthen this relationship across multiple areas of mutual interest, both bilaterally and multilaterally.
Horta concluded his message with best wishes for success to Chancellor Merz, the new German government, and the people of Germany.
