DILI, 19 May 2025 (TATOLI) – The Ambassador of Western Sahara to the United Nations (UN), Sidi Mohamed Omar, expressed his gratitude and appreciation to the Government of Timor-Leste for its continuous solidarity and support in the struggle of the Sahrawi people.
His remarks came after a courtesy meeting with Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão at the Government Office in Dili.
“We are deeply honored by the warm reception from Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão. This is not our first meeting, and as always, we feel that Timor-Leste is our second home,” Sidi Mohamed stated
During the discussion, both parties exchanged views on current issues, particularly the developments in the Western Sahara conflict.
Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão reaffirmed the commitment and support of the Timorese government and people for the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination and full independence.
“He (PM Xanana) reiterated that Timor-Leste will continue to support our struggle in regional and international forums so that the Sahrawi people may enjoy the same freedom that the Timorese people have achieved,” Ambassador Sidi Omar added.
He also expressed deep appreciation for Timor-Leste’s continued solidarity, describing it as an act of moral and historical courage that holds great significance in the Sahrawi people’s fight for independence.
The meeting was also attended by the Ambassador of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic to Timor-Leste, Boibait Malainin Boibuat.
Previously, on March 11, 2025, the National Parliament (PN) of Timor-Leste approved a resolution to establish a special commission to monitor the Western Sahara conflict. During a plenary session led by Parliamentary President Maria Fernanda Lay, the resolution was unanimously passed with 54 votes in favor.
The commission is tasked with tracking the progress of the Sahrawi people’s struggle at both national and international levels, including following decisions made by the UN General Assembly and the Security Council while maintaining relations with relevant organizations.
Additionally, the commission will play a role in drafting policy recommendations and actively engaging with the Western Sahara Parliamentary Committee to strengthen Timor-Leste’s position as a key supporter of Western Sahara’s independence.
The commission consists of eight members from various political parties, including CNRT, FRETILIN, PD, KHUNTO, and PLP, along with alternative members. Its mandate will last throughout the current legislative term and may be extended until the conflict is resolved.
With strong political backing and close diplomatic ties, Timor-Leste reaffirms its position as one of the most consistent supporters of the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination.
