DILI, 24 May 2025 (TATOLI) – President and Nobel Peace Laureate José Ramos Horta expressed his deepest condolences to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam following the passing of former President Trần Đức Lương, who passed away on May 20, 2025, in Hanoi.
In a formal letter of condolence addressed to Vietnamese President, Lương Cường on May 21, 2025, President Horta acknowledged the significant contributions of the late President Trần Đức Lương to Vietnam’s development and to strengthening bilateral relations between Timor-Leste and Vietnam.
Former President Trần Đức Lương served as Vietnam’s Head of State from 1997 to 2006, a period marked by stability and significant national development. Throughout his tenure, he dedicated his life to serving the Vietnamese nation and the Communist Party of Vietnam, holding high office with integrity and wisdom.
The late President played an important role in fostering the historic bonds of friendship and solidarity between Timor-Leste and Vietnam, contributing to the strengthening of bilateral relations between the two nations.
“President Trần Đức Lương dedicated his life to the service of the Nation and the Communist Party of Vietnam, holding high office with integrity and wisdom. His legacy as Head of State reflects a period of stability and significant development for Vietnam and is remembered with respect and admiration by all those who share the values of peace, sovereignty, and the progress of peoples,” stated President Horta in his message of condolence.
On behalf of the people of Timor-Leste, President Ramos-Horta extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and to the brotherly people of Vietnam during this period of national mourning, expressing hope that the memory of President Trần Đức Lương’s service will continue to inspire future generations of Vietnamese.
