DILI, 01 June 2025 (TATOLI) – The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Bendito dos Santos Freitas, represented the State of Timor-Leste by participating in the Signing Ceremony for the Creation of the International Organization for Mediation. The signing of the Convention was held in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, People’s Republic of China, on Friday, May 30.
The Convention on the establishment of the International Organization for Mediation was signed by 32 countries, including China and Timor-Leste, with the presence of the United Nations. Other countries, such as Samoa and Switzerland, participated as observer members.
The International Organization for Mediation (IOMed) is an intergovernmental organization established to promote and facilitate the peaceful resolution of international disputes and to develop friendly and cooperative relations between states through mediation.
IOMed aims to be the first International Intergovernmental Organization specifically dedicated to the resolution of international disputes through mediation, offering a new means for the peaceful resolution of conflicts in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations. This organization focuses on promoting dialogue, peaceful resolution and consultation for international disputes faced by nations.
Meanwhile, the Timor-Leste delegation that participated in the signing of the convention was composed of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Bendito dos Santos Freitas and the Director-General of Multilateral Affairs, Leoneto Mantilo.
