DILI, 30 July 2025 (TATOLI) – The non-governmental organization Plan International Timor-Leste (PITL) has announced plans to continue advocating for social inclusion and human rights across communities nationwide.
Speaking at a reflection event held at Delta Nova Hall in Komoro, PITL Country Director Fátima Estrela Soares emphasized the importance of celebrating past achievements while preparing to expand successful practices to other municipalities and communities.
“Previously, we implemented a project titled Toward a Safe and Inclusive Future in selected municipalities including Ermera, Dili, Ainaro, and Baukau. As the project concludes, we are reflecting on what we’ve accomplished and preparing to build on these successes,” Director Soares said.
The initiative focused on promoting the rights of persons with disabilities (PwDs) and LGBTQI+ individuals. Activities included training families to raise awareness, strengthening economic empowerment through grassroots initiatives, and encouraging self-started ventures.
“This project received €700,000 in funding from the European Union over two years. The progress we’ve seen has helped shift community mindsets toward respecting social inclusion and human rights,” she added.
Soares reaffirmed Plan International’s commitment to protecting and promoting social inclusion, stressing that discrimination must not be tolerated.
Local leader Wilson Maria Pereira, Chief of Maubisse Vila, noted that the project worked closely with local authorities to address persistent discrimination within families and society.
“As local authorities, we have a role to continue promoting social inclusion in our communities to ensure safe and dignified lives for all,” Pereira stated.
He added that while societal transformation may take time, the desire for impartiality and dignity in both family and public life is shared by all.
