DILI, 08 december 2025 (TATOLI) – President and Nobel Peace Laureate José Ramos-Horta has officially opened the 2025 Nativity Exhibition at the Nicolau Lobato Presidential Palace, continuing one of Timor-Leste’s most cherished Christmas traditions.

The event forms part of the annual “Christmas with the People” program, a long-standing initiative of the President of the Republic.

This year’s exhibition showcases 68 handmade nativity scenes created between 18 November and 3 December.

The displays are divided into two categories: 15 entries by children aged 16 and under, and 53 entries by adults. Each scene highlights environmental responsibility through the use of organic, traditional, and recycled materials.

Speaking at the ceremony, President Ramos-Horta emphasized the deep cultural and spiritual significance of the tradition.

“The Nativity Scene is a rich tradition deeply rooted in peoples Christian faith. It is a profound expression of our faith, creativity, and community spirit,” he said.

He also praised the creativity of young participants, noting the event’s importance for cultural preservation and community building.

“I am pleased to open the Nativity scene competition made by our children and young people. The nativity exhibition is more than a contest – it is an opportunity to strengthen our bonds as a community, to pass our traditions to the younger generation, and to showcase the artistic talent and spiritual devotion of our people.”

The exhibition runs from 6 December 2025 to 9 January 2026, with winners announced at the closing ceremony. Ten winners in each category will receive certificates and cash prizes, and all other participants will also be recognized with tokens of appreciation.

Festivities will culminate on 20 December 2025 with the annual Christmas with the People celebration at the Presidential Palace, where the Presidency will distribute Christmas gifts to 5,000 community members, including children, widows, orphanages, and people with special needs.
