DILI, 30 July 2025 (TATOLI) – The Ministry of Health, together with the World Health Organization (WHO) and Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), gave certificates to four Timorese scholarship recipients who will study epidemiology in Indonesia. They will attend a master’s program called the Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP), which teaches how to track and respond to diseases.
The Vice Minister of Health, José Mango dos Reis, said this training will help improve disease surveillance in Timor-Leste, especially during health emergencies like the recent rabies outbreak. He thanked WHO and KOICA for their strong support.
The four scholars – Liliana Natalia from Manufahi, Octavio Sequeira from Viqueque, João Cardoso from Bobonaro, and Fernando Camnahas from RAEOA – will begin classes in August 2025 at Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta and finish in August 2027.
The project supporting this program began in April 2023 and has already improved health data systems and disease reporting across the country. WHO, KOICA, and Timor-Leste’s health institutions said they’re committed to continuing this work to make the country’s health system stronger and more reliable.
