DILI, 07 August 2025 (TATOLI) – The Timor-Leste Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI-TL) and the East Kimberley Chamber of Commerce and Industry (EKCCI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Dili today to deepen economic ties between the two regions.

The agreement was signed during the 2025 Timor-Leste–Australia Economic and Business Conference (TLAUCON2025), reinforcing efforts to build stronger partnerships between Timorese and Australian private sectors.

The MoU formalises a cooperative relationship between the two Chambers, recognising their shared role in representing the private sectors of East Kimberley and Timor-Leste, and their mutual interest in fostering economic growth, workforce development, and commercial partnerships.

Under the agreement, the parties have agreed to collaborate on workforce development and training, two-way business partnerships, and economic development. This includes promoting joint initiatives to enhance skills and employment outcomes, facilitating commercial exchange and trade between the regions, and identifying long-term projects that support shared investment, knowledge transfer, and sustainable economic growth.

The MoU establishes a framework for cooperation through activities such as technical missions, training programs, exchange of information, and annual high-level meetings. The agreement affirms the importance of mutual benefit, cultural respect, and regular communication between the Parties.

The East Kimberley region of Western Australia and Timor-Leste share more than just geographic proximity. Both regions are rich in natural resources, have strong agricultural potential, vibrant local cultures, and have a shared interest in advancing regional trade and driving sustainable development. The MoU represents a strategic partnership grounded in these common strengths and shared opportunities.

EKCCI President Amanda McLean said the agreement reflects the Chamber’s commitment to regional cooperation and practical outcomes.

“This is more than a formal agreement, it’s a commitment to action. We already have a strong and existing relationship with Timor-Leste through the valuable contributions that Timorese workers make in our region, and this partnership allows us to build on that foundation. We’re building on this relationship and laying the groundwork for trade and investment partnerships that will benefit businesses and communities in both East Kimberley and Timor-Leste,” McLean said.

CCI-TL President Jorge Manuel de Araújo Serrano also welcomed the signing, saying the agreement represents a significant step toward stronger regional collaboration.

“We welcome this important partnership with EKCCI. By working together, we aim to unlock economic potential, build mutually beneficial connections between our communities, ultimately supporting the growth and diversification of our private sector in Timor-Leste,” he said.

The MoU will remain in effect for an initial five-year term and represents only the first step in a broader, long-term vision – one that both parties are committed to advancing through ongoing collaboration, practical action, and measurable outcomes.
