DILI, 21 August 2025 (TATOLI) – The Government of China, represented by its Embassy and Ambassador to Timor-Leste, Wang Wenli, and Timor-Leste’s Minister of Defence, Pedro Klamar Fuik, signed an agreement on Wednesday for the construction of a Military Hospital in the country. The signing ceremony took place during the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the National Liberation Armed Forces of Timor-Leste (FALINTIL), held in Tasi Tolu, Dili.
The hospital, which will be fully funded by the Chinese government as part of bilateral cooperation in the defence sector, is set to be built in a strategic location behind the Timor-Leste Defence Forces Headquarters in Fatuhada, Dili. The eight-story facility will have a capacity of 100 beds and will include an intensive care unit, emergency services, and wards for both general and VIP patients. It will also offer specialized medical services in oncology, neurology, and cardiology.
Primarily intended for military personnel, veterans, and their families, the hospital is also expected to improve access to healthcare for the general population, serving as a vital support to the national health system.
In his remarks, President José Ramos-Horta highlighted the importance of international cooperation in strengthening national security, particularly in the context of Timor-Leste’s integration into the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
“International cooperation and strategic partnerships are crucial to consolidating the country’s defence capabilities, especially at a time when we are seeking to assert ourselves as an active and responsible member of ASEAN, promoting peace and stability in the region,” Head of State said.
President Horta also acknowledged the contributions of several partner countries –including China, Australia, Brazil, South Korea, the United States, India, Japan, New Zealand, and Portugal –for their technical support, training, and assistance in developing Timor-Leste’s armed forces.
“These partnerships not only strengthen our military capabilities but also better prepare us to address current security challenges, from defending our territory to combating transnational crime,” he added.
The President concluded by reaffirming that deepening strategic relations with friendly nations will remain a cornerstone of Timor-Leste’s foreign policy.
“As we assert ourselves as a relevant player in regional stability, it is essential that we reinforce the foundations of our development and security through strong and lasting partnerships,” he said.
