Prime Minister urges Timorese to put national interest above politics

DILI, 12 November 2025 (TATOLI) — Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão has called for national unity in defending Timor-Leste’s interests during the commemoration of the 34th anniversary of the Santa Cruz Massacre, held on Wednesday at the Santa Cruz Cemetery under the theme “I am Timorese and Proud of My Country.”

In his address, Xanana Gusmão said the struggle of Timorese youth on November 12, 1991, remains a powerful reminder of the importance of acting together to safeguard the nation’s collective goals.

The Prime Minister highlighted the symbolism of the flags displayed during the ceremony — those of Timor-Leste, Portugal, and the two political movements, the Revolutionary Front for an Independent East Timor (FRETILIN) and the Timorese Democratic Union (UDT). He noted that the joint presence of these party flags, once divided by ideological differences, now stands as a symbol of youth unity during the struggle for self-determination.

According to Xanana, national interest must always take precedence over partisan politics.

“Each party may have its own opinions, but when it comes to the national interest, we must stand united,” the Prime Minister said.

He praised the courage and legacy of the young demonstrators of November 12, stressing that their sacrifice continues to shape Timor-Leste’s national identity and moral direction.

“It was the youth of November 12 who taught us and shaped a new character for our nation, showing us the path forward. That is what gives meaning to this commemoration and invites us to deep reflection,” he said.

Deputy Prime Minister Mariano Assanami Sabino said the event served as a moment to honor the martyrs, remember the victims’ sacrifices, and reflect on the historical significance of the tragedy.

“The freedom we enjoy today did not come for free. Our youth must study, work, and build the country together,” Sabino stated.

The Acting President of the 12 November Committee, Filipe Pereira, also addressed the gathering, emphasizing that while the date is remembered as a day of tragedy, it should also be celebrated as a symbol of victory in the people’s struggle for liberation.

“We commemorate this day every year. It is true that it was a massacre, but it also represents a powerful demonstration of courage and victory in the fight for independence,” he said.

Pereira urged today’s younger generation, especially those working in public institutions, to draw inspiration from the courage of past generations in order to design better social and economic policies for the people.

He expressed gratitude to the survivors, the families of the victims, and the international journalists who documented the massacre, especially Max Stahl, whose footage exposed the brutality of the Indonesian occupation to the world.

The commemoration began with a thanksgiving mass at Motael Church, followed by a march to the Santa Cruz Cemetery, where wreaths were laid in memory of the victims.

The ceremony was attended by veterans, religious leaders, government representatives, families of the martyrs, and members of the 12 November Committee.
