DILI, 04 january 2025 (TATOLI) – The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres expressed deep concern over United States military action in Venezuela, warning that it sets a dangerous precedent under international law.

The concern was conveyed on Saturday by UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, ahead of an expected meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss the escalating situation.

According to the UN, tensions between the United States and Venezuela in recent months culminated on Saturday morning with the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro by US special forces.

“The Secretary-General is deeply alarmed by the recent escalation in Venezuela, culminating with today’s United States military action in the country, which has potential worrying implications for the region,” Dujarric said in a statement.

Guterres stressed that the implications of the action go beyond the specific political situation in Venezuela.

“Independently of the situation in Venezuela, these developments constitute a dangerous precedent. The Secretary-General continues to emphasize the importance of full respect – by all – of international law, including the UN Charter,” read statement.

Guterres also voiced concern that established rules governing international relations may have been breached.

“He’s deeply concerned that the rules of international law have not been respected,” Dujarric said.

The Secretary-General urged all parties involved to avoid further escalation and to pursue a peaceful resolution.

Guterres called on stakeholders to engage in “inclusive dialogue” in accordance with human rights principles and international law.
