DILI, 08 january 2025 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic, Jose Ramos-Horta, received Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão on thursday at the Nicolau Lobato Presidential Palace for the first regular meeting of 2026, as part of the institutional coordination between the sovereign bodies of the State.

During the meeting, the Prime Minister informed the Head of State that the general security situation across the national territory remains stable and peaceful. Despite some minor incidents recorded during the festive season in municipalities such as Ermera, Ainaro, and Viqueque, the Prime Minister assured that these were promptly controlled by the competent authorities. The President of the Republic expressed his appreciation for the civic maturity shown by the Timorese people in preserving peace and social harmony during the New Year celebrations.

The two leaders also addressed issues on the national diplomatic agenda, highlighting the final preparations for the official visit of the Prime Minister of Australia, Anthony Albanese, scheduled for January 28. They also analyzed the calendar of activities under the Timorese presidency of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP), including the celebrations for the organization’s 30th anniversary in July of this year.

Regarding Timor-Leste’s ASEAN accession process, the Prime Minister reported that the Government continues to strictly comply with the procedures and technical requirements of the regional bloc, ensuring active participation aligned with national strategic goals at both the ministerial and technical levels.

In the field of internal administration and State financial management, the Prime Minister provided clarifications on the status of civil servant salaries, confirming that the Ministry of Finance is currently activating the “free balance” system to enable payments for January following the long holiday period. He further underscored the Government’s commitment to strengthening budget execution efficiency, ensuring the responsible use of public resources for essential services and the promotion of the country’s sustainable development.
