DILI, 22 january 2026 (TATOLI) – President of the Republic, José Ramos-Horta on wednesday met with Alexander Soros, Chair of the Board of the Open Society Foundations (OSF), on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

The meeting focused on strengthening support for Timor-Leste’s media sector and safeguarding press freedom.

During the meeting, the President expressed his gratitude for the decades of support provided by the foundation and its founder, George Soros, who has long championed democratic values and press freedom in Timor-Leste and across the globe.

The central focus of the discussion was on the current challenges facing the media sector in Timor-Leste.

Ramos-Horta personally delivered a letter from local journalists detailing their difficulties and shared the document directly with Soros via WhatsApp.

In a positive response to the President’s advocacy, the OSF Chair committed to providing support to strengthen the country’s media landscape and protect freedom of the press.

To further solidify this partnership, the President formally invited Alexander Soros to visit Timor-Leste to honor his father’s legacy and witness the nation’s progress.

This meeting is part of the President’s broader mission in Davos to maintain high-level international contacts and mobilize resources for Timor-Leste’s development, particularly in the areas of institutional strengthening and support for civil society.
