DILI, 30 January 2026 (TATOLI) – The newly appointed German Ambassador to Timor-Leste, Ralf Beste, has reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to supporting the country’s development, particularly in transport, education and vocational training.

Beste made the statement following talks with Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão at the Government Palace in Dili today, shortly after presenting his credentials to President José Ramos-Horta earlier in the day.

Beste said the talks focused on the long-standing partnership between the two countries, including Germany’s early support for Timor-Leste’s independence.

He said Prime Minister Gusmão expressed appreciation for Germany’s consistent support since independence in the early 2000s.

Beste emphasized that Germany’s support has been motivated not just by government policy, but also by widespread solidarity from the German public throughout Timor-Leste’s fight for independence.

He explained that as Timor-Leste becomes more involved in ASEAN, both countries can explore more ways to work together and strengthen ties with Germany and the EU.

Germany has already supported key infrastructure projects in Timor-Leste, including providing the ferries Berlin Nakroma and Berlin Ramelau, which play a vital role in enhancing maritime connectivity across the country.

In the education sector, Germany continues to support vocational training programs designed to prepare young Timorese for the labor market. Academic exchange initiatives also enable Timorese students and lecturers to pursue studies and teaching opportunities in Germany.

He emphasized that the meeting went beyond a courtesy call, focusing on identifying practical areas for expanded collaboration.

Beste concluded that Germany remains committed to enhancing bilateral relations at both governmental and societal levels and looks forward to exploring further development opportunities across Timor-Leste’s municipalities.
